Once upon a time, a rich merchant traveled to foreign countries to sell his goods. He asked his daughters what present he could bring back for them.
The eldest daughter asked him to bring her back jewelry, while the second daughter asked him to get her a gold mirror. The third daughter, who was kind and gentle, asked only for a scarlet flower.
When the father returned he had brought back with him jewelry and a golden mirror, but could not find a scarlet flower. He was then told by a village elder that a scarlet flower did exist nearby--but that it could only be found in a cave, where it was guarded by a monster who would kill anyone who entered the cave.
Upon hearing this, the youngest daughter, Alenushka, went to the cave and met the monster. At first, she was very frightened, but the monster told her not to be afraid as he was a prince who had been bewitched by a devil and turned into a monster. He was forced to guard the red flower. The only way to break the spell was to have a beautiful girl kiss him. Only then would he again regain his princely form.
Alenushka was that beautiful girl who kissed the monster. And he did turn back into a prince. They were soon married and lived happily ever after.
