Antique salt boxes

Just shy of a hundred years old, these boxes were used to house precious--and at the time, quite expensive--salt. In olden times each village had a wood carver who vied with other specialists of the region to make the most beautiful salt boxes.

Antique bread boxes

It wasn't just salt boxes that artisans of the region made. These bread boxes, which contained flat bread, also inspired much creative work.

Spice boxes

Traditionally colored red, with various tinted trims, these (always circular) wooden boxes contained spices and herbs to be used in the kitchen.
