Who was Richard the Lionhearted?

Richard I (the Lionhearted) was the most famous and feared knight of medieval times.

The son of Henry II, the king of England, Richard inherited the throne upon the death of his father.

Richard did not get along with his father and revolted against him several times. Nor did he think much of England, spending as little time there as he could, and prefering to live in France (he never learned to speak English).

What Richard is known for is valor and a ready desire to fight--he was never as happy as when he was in the thick of a battle. Richard the Lionheart, thus called because of his bravery, later took part in a crusade to "liberate" the Holy Land from the infidel, which turned into a disaster.

Richard gave up all thoughts of conquering the holy land and returned home. But this, too, went awry. Richard was captured by a rival king and held for ransom. Richard's own brother, John (the bad king John of Robin Hood fame) paid this king to either keep Richard imprisoned indefinitely, or kill him.

Richard was ransomned (an act which bankrupted England), and released. He quickly returned to his fighting ways. Soon thereafter, while arrogantly scouting too near the defenses of a castle he was besieging, Richard was struck in the shoulder by an arrow desperately fired by one of the castle's defenders. The arrow struck deep, and a few days later Richard the Lionheart, the king of England, and the most renowned figure of medieval times, lay dead.
