The trade of textile stamp carving has been passed down through the generations in Afghanistan, which is where these handcarved textile stamps come from.
Each design is first carefully outlined on paper. When the craftsman is satisfied with his design, the image is carved into teak blocks of wood, resulting in the textile stamps you see here.
Each stamp, with the exception of the mini, is 50-100 years old and comes from the wooded northern regions of Afghanistan.
Textile stamps are typically used as decorative articles, although artists purchase them to stamp patterns with on various mediums, and some people even make cookies with them!
And, of course, textile stamps can be used to stamp textiles with--as artisans have done for centuries!
